Frederic Remington modeled the cowboy after his friend, Charlie Trego, a native of Chester County. Remington depicted the cowboy on a horse in the action of an abrupt stop.  Remington specifically selected the location on Kelly Drive for the installation of his only large-scale bronze work.   The artwork was initiated by the Fairmount Park Art Association.
