Artist:
Etting, Emlen
Date:
1980
Materials:
aluminum, concrete base
Location:
City Hall Plaza Northeast corner, Dilworth Plaza, 15th & John F. Kennedy Boulevard

Description:
Sculptor Emlen Etting designed the sculpture with triangular shapes, like wings taking off in flight that are intended to evoke a Phoenix rising from the ashes. The artist thought of this as an abstract symbol of the late Mayor Richardson Dilworth's (1898-1974) plans for the rehabilitation of the City. Mayor Dilworth served terms from 1956-1962. The artwork was received as a gift to the City from the Richardson Dilworth Memorial Committee in 1978.
